About the Company
Black Studies Online is the first and only online educational program dedicated to providing a variety of scholarly courses exploring the history, culture, and contemporary experiences of Black people to the general public. Our courses will explore the lives and contributions of Black people throughout the Diaspora – from the African continent and the United States, to the Caribbean, Central and South America, as well as Europe. Our goal is to provide you with an educational experience that is that is not only informative, but inspiring and fun as well.
Black Studies Online presents a new model for student interaction and engagement in an online setting, as well as presenting a new model of Community Teaching in which instructors engage with a student population outside of the traditional academy.
BLACK STUDIES ONLINE aims to:
CHALLENGE Instructors to investigate the best ways to teach their area of expertise in an online space.
CHALLENGE Students to increase their capacity to engage in complex learning in an onine space.
CHANGE Instructors in order to illustrate that serious study and scholarship can occur beyond the walls of a classroom.
CHANGE Students in order to inspire their liberation through education.
CHARGE Instructors with the desire to invest not only in their course but in the consciousness raising of a cohort.
CHARGE Students with the ability to imagine a world where personal liberation can in turn free their community.
The Black Studies Online system of learning offers both instructors and students a level of autonomy not found in traditional educational systems. Black Studies Online (BSO) pushes the boundaries of online education by providing a support system fostered by intentional communication and collaboration where the method of study is academically rigorous while the means of transference are organic and unique to each cohort.
Company Culture
As an internet company, Black Studies Online allows instructors to teach their classes from the comfort of their home or office. Your hours are flexible, but we do require consistency with some things. You must select:
1) the day of the week that your class will begin, which will be the day you submit your weekly class online (i.e. Monday, Tuesday, etc.), and
2) the day and time of the week you will engage with your students for your weekly webinars (for example, Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.).
Once you commit to those times and inform your students, you will be expected to maintain that schedule during the 10-week session.
In addition, throughout the week you will be expected to monitor your class discussions as well as grade any individual assignments you provide your students. We also expect that you will monitor the class for disruptive and disrespectful behavior from students. You will be given a faculty handbook which will give you guidelines on how to handle these issues.
